Next Wednesday, I'll be receiving a gift of a 1972 Wing Presentation II bow. The bow pulls 38# @ 28" and is either 70" or 72" long. Although I have not seen it as yet, I believe it to be in near mint condition. It was given to the present owner by Wing who sponsored him at the time.

Anyway, can you folks give me any advice on which arrow shafts I should consider for this bow. I'd like to keep it on the lower $$$ range as I'm just getting back to shooting after 7 or 8 years and need to practice and get my form back. For the time being, I'll be shooting in the backyard (20-30 yds) then at the range after I get where I won't make myself look like an idiot. Probably close to 100% paper targets.

Aluminum?
Cedar?
Fiberglas?

Thanks for your help!!

Well, it depends on lots of things, but I'd say some aluminum 2016's would get you really close.

I usually use carbons, but mainly for their durability for stump shooting or hunting.

Aluminums are straighter and since they won't be taking a beating, I think it's a good choice for you.

If you ever want to run some numbers, there is a "dynamic spine" calculator (in spreadsheet/Microsoft Excel format) made by Stu Miller which a lot of guys swear by. You can find it here:

as todd sez, depends ...

for my money, i'd go with carbons instead of alums - just more durable, and feature a smaller diameter to help with the long marks. if you go with the cheaper xx75 alums, they won't be as tough as the stronger and more expensive x7 alums. carbons will trump the x7's for knock-about strength. i'd opt for beman bohwunters, and 500 spine should work out well for a good range of arrow lengths and holding weights. use the inserts and try out different point weights. tape on some mylar vanes and yer good to go. :D

ps - the stu miller arrow calculator *may* not work for everyone! take it with a box of salt! ;)
