I learned to setup on FITA-style equipment -- set the arrow point just a bit wide of center shot, and when in doubt, it is better the arrow be a bit on the stiff side.

I have a new wooden riser -- and, with what I think is a really slim plastic flipper rest (the Hoyt Super Rest), the arrow point is a good arrow width wide of center shot. From two people, I have heard that a standard way to set up such a bow is to shoot arrows that are fairly weak, so they bend around the riser, and not worry about center shot.
Anyone have any experience with this? It is new to me.

Sounds like you are getting into the aspect of traditional archery known as tuning your arrows to match your bow as opposed to the other way around.

I'm surprised you've never done this....but I guess if you've always shot the FITA rigs, you wouldn't really need to.

The one thing I don't agree with is that he says to shoot fletched shafts together with the bare shafts to see how they group. If you KNOW where your arrow usually goes when you shoot, you don't need a group of fletched arrows to tell you this.
You will clearly see (especially past 20 yards)an arrow that is too weak plane to the right, and one that is too stiff plane to the left.

I started out that way -- shooting off the shelf, you don't have center shot or spine adjustments and I never even considered how to set up a bow, making all my adjustments in the arrows.
Once I found bows where you COULD adjust it, I learned how. Now, I have a wooden riser set up to take a plunger button, and am finding that my learning has been incomplete
My original thought was that a 40-lb metal-risered FITA-style bow and a 40-lb wooden bow with an elevated rest and plunger button could conceivably shoot the same arrow. When I look at the difference in center shot, I have my doubts. I will find out soon -- I just got the bow, and so far work and now snow have prevented me from actually shooting.

Moving from theory to application -- I set up my bow this weekend and tried it. Without a plunger button, bareshafted until I found the right arrow -- then shot a few fletched arrows -- they all grouped a few inches to right of center. Added the plunger, which just barely peeks out the riser, and adjusted so they flew to the center. It doesn't take much plunger or plunger action to move the arrows a few inches into the center.
