On those rare occasions when I have back tension working, it seems that I pull my drawing shoulder down as I reach full draw, which initiates back tension, which enables a great shot.
So, I conclude that McKinney's success is partly due to his high school sport -- pole vaulting. I can think of no better activity to teach you control over and power in pulling your shoulders down.
Since I will never be a pole vaulter, and since it is inconvenient to seek out a lat pulldown machine, I asked my local guru how to develop this ability.
He suggested joining my hands on top of my head, and pulling my elbows down.
This works -- but all the resistance is provided by my neck. Maybe I will be the first archer to develop a neck like a defensive tackle.
