Hi

I have a new set of limbs for my Mirage takedown -- they are more heavily recurved than my old ones, and so, using the same string, my brace height increases from 8.5 to 9.5. So, the question is, if I make a new string, how much longer should it be if I want to drop the brace height back down to 8.5?

Since your limbs don't change length linearly, and since the curvature differs from one set to the next, I'd say it would take a rocket scientist to figure it out exactly

Or if you had someone to help you, just put the bow in a stringer, brace it with the stringer so your bowstring is at 8.5", then measure the curved distance that is left between your string loop and the limb nocks. That should get you close

Or. if it is an endless loop string you could untwist it all the way and check the brace height that way. That might help you make an estimate. - lbg

Best way to tweak out the brace height is to make and use a tillering that has one permanent top loop with about a 2" compressed loop length - the other bottom loop will employ a timber hitch. Adjust the hitch 'til the desired brace height is attained, remove the tillering string and use it's length to set the arms on yer endless string jig (or estimate strand lengths for a Flemish string). Make your tillering string with the same fiber type you'll use for the real bowstring (to allow for stretch), and make the tillering string about 6"-8" longer than the AMO length of yer bow.
