I spun up a new string last night and, as always, when it came time to burn the ends of the servings, I crushed the flame just a bit too soon, leaving a distinctive lump.
What has been your experience -- is there much leeway for letting it burn too long? I don't want to ruin my serving or, worse still, ruin my string.

I'm pretty new at string making but I don't "burn" the ends of the serving. I just cut them off close after the tail end is pulled tight.

Four turn whipping, pull tight, cut close, wick in a tiny drop of thin CYA. I've spun thousands of strings and never had a serving end fail.

Same as Dave for me. I only use glue on my tie on nock points.
As Rob said they don't let go very often and with modern sevings such as Halo and Majesty they don't go "boing" and ruin your day like monofilament.
